Comps & Storyboards
Stepping Stones

Comps and storyboards are visual scripts of ideas. They are an interim step presented for client approval and feedback, to help establish the concept or general visual direction of the end product. The former is usually necessarily rough and simplistic, the latter more visually close to the final product. Their complexity and detail depend on budget and time constraints, as well as individual client needs. Clients that need to make presentations to a wide range of people, or who are not particularly visual, often prefer high level full color comps, though may not necessarily want to pay for the time it takes to create them. The conceptual phase is often the most time consuming part of the project, and may go through several approval rounds. Thumbnails are small simplistic black and white drawings.
