Hello Bali! Hibiscus Inn

I just arrived to Bali, and I have found a wonderful slice of paradise to stay in.

All friends are invited!

I think I was very lucky to find this accomodation. It is lovely, artistic, large, very clean, and family run. It is down a dirt road, set in the rice paddies. I love it.

There are traditional old people working the fields, and the family who had these fabulous bungalows built were born in Ubud and have created a magical artistic place. It is luxury with traditional ways, and they bring fresh little flowers and breakfast. The walled family compound is garden filled and has small lilly ponds. They are happy to arrange for tickets to puppet shows and cultural events, and drive us around, but are not at all pushy. They seem like VERY decent and nice people, and their guest book is filled with complements. The father is a teacher of hotel hospitality and food presentation. They have 2 small playful children.

$10-$15/night gets you a wonderful place! If you are staying at least 5 days, they will negotiate. I like the second story places, for the views, privacy, and breeze.

Each place has a balcony with a little table, there is room to paint, and the private bathrooms are wonderful. It is VERY clean and fresh.

The birds sing all the time, and the breeze is lovely.

Much of Ubud is very commercial, but it still is charming, lush, and the energy is good.

If you come to Bali to visit, please read my advice (immediately below the following photos). Directions to wonderful Hibiscus Inn, follow. This is not to be confused with Hibiscus Inn 2, which is next door and owned by the brother!

DIRECTIONS:
It is just west of Central Ubud and Monkey forest road on a dirt road going south from Jalan Raya.

FROM DENPASAR, Bali, Indonesia:
• Go to Central Ubud
• Going East on Jalan Raya, pass Monkey forest road and Jalan Kajeng,
• Left on Jalan Bisma down the dirt road several buildings. Pass Juwita Inn. If you have passed Honey moon Guesthouse, you have gone too far.

• Ala's Hibiscus Inn is on the right, set back away from the road. You must walk down a narrow cement path along a sliver of aquaduct to the end (there will be a guest house there, but turn left for a few steps and then an immediate right and continue though the ricefields to the end, and turn left (walk a few yards), and then right through the iron gate and into the garden. Keep walking back till you find the family home of Wayan (why - ann) the mother, and Made (Mah- day) the father.

There are ATM's at the airport and all over town. For bare essentials (room, frugal meals, occasional local transport) I recommend people pull out $1,000,000 Rupiah for each week they plan to stay here.

You can buy a ticket at the airport for a private cab to Ubud for about $12 USA ($115,000 Rupiah ). It is about 45 minute's drive. If you want to save on the cost, hurry and find someone else from the plane to share the drive. Busses sound like too much of a hassle (transfers), and there's no one to help you down the dirt road or carry your luggage upstairs.

$10,000 Rupiah is about $1 USA (as of March 2004)
